Natural stone retaining walls

Stone fits the older streets of Johnson City and Jonesborough, and a well-laid dry wall can outlast the house it sits beside.

East Tennessee has a long tradition of stacked stone walls along farm fields, springs and old house sites. Limestone is the local rock under much of the valley, and fieldstone pulled from pastures shows up in walls all over Washington County. Today, stone walls are built three main ways.

Which kind of stone wall?

StyleHow it's builtBest for
Dry-laid stoneStones fitted and stacked with no mortar, battered back into the slopeGarden terraces and moderate heights; drains through the face
Mortared stoneStone set in mortar on a concrete footingFormal walls; needs weep holes and drainage behind
Stone veneerStone facing over a block or concrete structural wallTaller or loaded walls where you want the stone look
Boulder wallLarge stones set by machineHolding a cut bank; needs equipment access

Why does dry-laid stone hold up?

Water can pass between the stones, so pressure doesn't build up the way it does behind a solid wall, and the wall flexes slightly with the ground instead of cracking. It still needs a solid base and gravel behind it, and it has to lean back into the slope. Heights are limited by stone size and the builder's skill.

Repairing an old stone wall

Older stone walls near downtown Johnson City, in Jonesborough's historic district and on farm properties often just need a section relaid where roots or water pushed stones out. Ask whether the builder can match the existing stone and laying pattern. If your property is in a historic district, check whether exterior changes need review before work starts.

Terraced gardens

Low stone walls stepped up a slope turn an unusable bank into planting beds and paths. Keeping each wall short also keeps the job simpler.

We don't quote prices. The builder sets a price only after seeing the slope, the soil and what sits above the wall, and anything said over the phone before that visit is a rough guess at best.

Common questions

Is stone stronger than block?

Not automatically. Either can be strong when it's built on a good base with drainage. Stone is chosen more for looks and setting, and taller loaded walls usually use a block or concrete core.

Can you match my old fieldstone wall?

Often, if similar stone is available locally. Ask the builder to show you samples before they start.
